SEASIDE AND MARINA, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Two Monterey County Free Libraries branches have been selected to try secure charging lockers that would let patrons charge their phones or laptops without leaving devices unattended near crowded wall outlets.
A county staff report associated with agenda item 26-846, heard October 20, describes a $5,825 innovation grant from the Pacific Library Partnership that would help purchase one charging locker for each of the Seaside and Marina libraries and replace some older portable charging batteries.
Why these two branches?
Library staff say Seaside and Marina were selected because they have suitable electrical-outlet space, heavy patron use, substantial demand for device charging and a history of incidents involving personal devices.
The report explains that older library facilities often have limited outlets, causing patrons to congregate in entryways or leave electronics unattended. Under the proposed pilot, a patron would use a locker secured with an individual code. The devices could be charged while the owner uses other library services, rather than keeping a phone connected to an exposed cable across a public walkway.
Are charging lockers available today?
Not confirmed. The county’s October report outlines a grant-funded purchase and installation plan; it does not give an installation completion date or announce that the lockers are available for public use. Residents should check directly with their branch before relying on this service.
The department plans to assess how the lockers perform, including installation, maintenance, security and usage, before deciding whether more locations should receive the equipment. The grant funds the equipment; the department expects to absorb associated installation and administration costs within existing budgets.
